BACOLOD CITY – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR) released six Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) from the Negros Occidental District Jail-Male Dormitory in Barangay Tabunan, Bago City on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.
Jail Chief Insp. Juniven Rey Umadhay, BJMP-NIR spokesperson, said they had cases of murder, reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, acts of lascivious conduct, homicide, grave threats, and violation of Republic Act (RA) 7166 (An act providing for synchronized national and local elections and for electoral reforms, authorizing appropriations therefor and for other purposes), and RA 9165 or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
He added that they were released after serving their sentences with deductions from the good conduct law.
“They were released after showing open and observable good conduct in the jail,” Umadhay said.
They have reunited with their families and started a renewed chapter in their lives, according to the BJMP-NIR.
“Families were reunited after long periods of separation, strengthening family ties that are essential for emotional healing and successful reintegration,” Umadhay said.
It underscored the commitment to humane corrections, restorative justice, and the promotion of compassion, especially during this holiday season.
The BJMP-NIR noted that the release of qualified PDLs was conducted strictly in accordance with existing laws, court orders, and due process, ensuring that public safety remains a top priority.
Umadhay said their release also contributes to the decongestion of jail facilities, enabling BJMP to better manage remaining PDLs and further improve jail services, security, and welfare programs.
