Amid the shortage of passenger vessels to cater to the influx of people in some ports during the peak of Christmas rush, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed two Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs) to ferry stranded passengers at the Port of Lucena in Quezon.
Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, commander of the PCG District Southern Tagalog, said the 75 passengers are bound for San Agustin, Romblon on Wednesday, Dec. 24. and were among those who took their chance to catch the remaining trips to be with their family and relatives for the traditional noche buena.
But they were unable to secure commercial transport which prompted the PCG to deploy two of its ships to ferry the stranded passengers.
“This initiative underscores the PCG’s dual role as a maritime safety agency and a humanitarian force, reaffirming our commitment to compassion, unity, and service, especially during critical times, while making the Christmas season meaningful for families across island communities,” Tuvilla said.
Those deployed were the BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406) to ferry 75 passengers which transported them. On the other hand, the BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410) remains on standby at the port to accommodate additional sea travelers.
Tuvilla said the operation is being conducted in strict adherence to maritime safety and security protocols.
