Man arrested for possession of firecrackers in Muntinlupa

Police arrested a 23-year-old man for possession of firecrackers in Muntinlupa in violation of a city ordinance which imposes a total ban on the use, possession and sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices. 

The violator was identified with the surname Noble, a Move It rider, and a resident of Santa Cruz, Manila.

He was arrested on Dec. 21 at Lakefront Purok 6 in Barangay Sucat, Muntinlupa. 

Investigation showed that a resident informed the Muntinlupa police about Noble possessing firecrackers. He was arrested and brought to the police station. 

Confiscated from him were one piece of “sawa” (1,000 rounds), five reams of Five Star and 100 pieces of Kwitis, all worth P5,200. 

Muntinlupa City Ordinance 14-092, approved in 2014, prohibits “the manufacture, display, sale, distribution, possession or use of firecrackers or pyrotechnic devices and such other similar devices and the exploding of firecrackers or other similar explosives within the territorial jurisdiction of Muntinlupa City.” 

“lt shall, likewise be unlawful for any person to discharge or explode, or cause to discharge or to explode, any firecrackers, or any other explosive or to use any pyrotechnic device or any such other similar device, at anytime and anywhere within the territory of Muntinlupa City,” according to the ordinance. 

Violators will be fined P1,000 to P1,500 and face imprisonment of up to six months.

For the first offense, violators will be fined P1,000 “or imprisonment of not more than one (1) month but not less than (2) days or both fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the Court.” 

The police will file a complaint against him for violation of the ordinance (possession of firecrackers) before the Muntinlupa City Prosecutor’s Office. 

The Muntinlupa City government reminded the public about the ordinance following the firecracker-related injury suffered by an 11-year-old boy after a Piccolo exploded. The child’s doctors recommended the amputation of his finger.
