The Malabon City government on Tuesday, Dec. 23, urged residents to strictly observe fire safety measures during the holiday season after two separate fire incidents displaced hundreds of residents in Barangays Concepcion and Potrero.
Mayor Jeannie Sandoval led the distribution of relief assistance to affected families, providing food packs and hygiene kits to around 150 households currently staying in evacuation centers.
“Ramdam po namin ang bigat ng pinagdaraanan ng ating mga kababayan na nasunugan, lalo na ngayong papalapit ang Kapaskuhan (We deeply feel the burden our residents who were affected by the fires are going through, especially with the Christmas season approaching),” she said.
“Magkasunod pong nangyari ang mga insidenteng ito at hindi po natin inaasahan ang ganitong sakuna. Ngunit makaaasa po kayo na ang pamahalaang lungsod ay laging handang umagapay at magserbisyo anumang oras o panahon,” Sandoval added.
In Barangay Concepcion, a fire broke out along Gulayan Street at around 7:34 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, and was declared out at 1:39 a.m. the following day.
The Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) said the fire spread rapidly due to tightly packed houses made mostly of light and combustible materials.
The City Social Welfare and Development Department reported that 167 families, or about 670 individuals, are currently staying in four evacuation sites in Barangay Concepcion, including the Concepcion Tech-Voc School and Sto. Niño Multipurpose Hall.
Another fire incident occurred along Camachile Road in Barangay Potrero at around 8:44 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21.
Authorities said houses made of light materials were affected.
The fire was declared out at 10:11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22.
The incident displaced 42 families, or 168 individuals, who sought temporary shelter at the Atis Covered Court.
The local government reminded residents to remain cautious during the holidays, when fire risks tend to increase.
Residents were advised to regularly check Christmas lights and electrical decorations, avoid overloading outlets and extension cords, and unplug appliances before sleeping or leaving their homes.
Illegal electrical connections were also discouraged, and residents were urged to have faulty wiring checked by qualified electricians.
City Administrator Dr. Alexander Rosete stressed the importance of vigilance and responsibility to ensure the safety of families during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“Ngayong Kapaskuhan at Bagong Taon, pinaaalalahanan po natin ang lahat na maging maingat. Ang kaligtasan ng bawat pamilya ang ating pangunahing layunin. Kaya’t maging mapagmatyag, responsable, at alerto kahit na tayo ay nagdiriwang (This Christmas and New Year, we remind everyone to be careful. The safety of every family is our top priority. That is why we must stay vigilant, responsible, and alert even as we celebrate),” Rosete said.
The city government urged residents to immediately report fire hazards through emergency hotlines or the Malabon All Hazards One Network Alert application to help ensure a safe and peaceful holiday season.
Emergency hotlines are available through the Malabon Command Center at 8921-6009, 8921-6029, 0942-372-9891, and 0919-062-5588.
