BAGUIO CITY – The City Health Services Office urged the people to look after their health during the holidays after 828 individuals died from cardiovascular diseases from January to Dec. 15.
“Don’t neglect your heart and mental health during the holidays,” Dr. Donnabel T. Panes, head of the CHSO Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, said.
“Christmas celebrations can lead to neglect in taking prescribed medications especially those with heart and cerebrovascular diseases which are the leading causes of death in the city,” Panes said.
“Alcohol is often consumed at parties and once you drink, you forget about your medication,” Panes warned.
She encouraged healthy food during Christmas celebrations to ensure that blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar, and creatinine are within normal or safe levels.
Panes said the number of deaths increases when weather changes in the months of April and November to December.
She stressed the importance of maintaining a respectful and kind attitude during family gatherings or social events during the holiday season for mental health and well-being.
“We should avoid commenting on someone’s weight, marital status, or finances, among other things, as this can add to the pressure that results in the holiday blues,” Panes said.
Holiday blues are defined as temporary feelings of sadness, stress, loneliness, or anxiety that many people experience during the holiday season that stem from pressures such as financial problems, family conflict, grieving the loss of loved ones, and unfulfilled expectations, among others.
CHSO data showed growing concerns about the increase in suicide-related deaths and nicotine-related illnesses.
As of Dec. 15, a total of 35 suicide deaths were recorded by CHSO.
"This is a time of giving and rejoicing but it may not be the same for those with medical or mental pressures, so let's all be kind and celebrate in a healthy way," Panes said.
