Shorecasting tilt highlights Pasko Fiesta 2025 in Davao City

DAVAO CITY – The festive atmosphere of the Pasko Fiesta sa Davao 2025 reached the coastline of Toril District on Sunday, Dec. 21, as fishing enthusiasts converged for a shorecasting tournament in Sitio Lawis, Barangay Lizada.
Anglers from different parts of the city lined the shore with rods in hand, while families and supporters watched from nearby, turning the competition into a lively community gathering.
Beyond showcasing angling skill and patience, the event underscored the richness of the Davao Gulf and the shared passion that unites local fishermen and hobbyists.
Rolly Sayup emerged as the day’s top performer after hauling in a 17.5-kilogram liplipan fish, the heaviest catch of the tournament. His fish drew cheers from the crowd during the official weighing and secured him the championship.
Placing second was Ricardo Escaño, with a six-kilogram mamsa fish, while Ronald Piamonte completed the podium by landing a 4.4-kilogram pandawan fish.
The tournament had a strong holiday spirit, as the Davao Venturing Anglers, among the organizers of the event, held raffles and distributed giveaways to participants and spectators.
Prizes included solar-powered electric fans, flashlights, vacuum flasks, sacks of rice, and cash assistance.
Representatives Paolo Duterte, Omar Vincent Duterte, and Harold Duterte of the PPP party-list, along with acting Davao Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte II, supported the activity as part of community-level holiday celebrations.
Sayup expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the event went beyond competition by bringing together fishing enthusiasts and traditional fishermen while promoting local livelihoods and the natural bounty of Davao’s seas.
Alexander Batao of the Davao Venturing Anglers thanked Rep. Paolo Duterte and the rest of the Duterte family for making the event for fishermen possible.
“Through this kind of sport, we truly saw the potential happiness it brought, mainly reflected in the faces of the fishermen earlier. We are also happy to feel the city’s support for this sport or hobby that we love,” Batao said.
