The Manila Police District (MPD) has increased police visibility and tightened security measures across the city for Simbang Gabi, citing recent riot incidents and the expected surge of churchgoers during the traditional dawn masses from Dec. 16 to 24.
Police have been deployed in and around major churches in Manila, including the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church), Manila Cathedral, San Sebastian Basilica, Our Lady of Loreto Parish in Sampaloc, and Paco Church, where large crowds are anticipated.
The heightened security follows previous youth-related disturbances and riot incidents reported in parts of Manila, prompting authorities to implement preventive measures to maintain peace and order.
According to the MPD, uniformed and plainclothes personnel have been stationed near churches, along transport terminals, and in other public areas.
Mobile patrols and police assistance desks were also set up to ensure immediate police response.
In addition, random checkpoints were conducted in several areas, including Sampaloc, the University Belt, and along España Boulevard, as part of the police’s crime prevention and visibility operations.
The MPD said it is coordinating closely with barangay officials and force multipliers, particularly during peak hours before and after Simbang Gabi masses.
The public was advised to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Security operations will remain in effect throughout the Simbang Gabi period and will continue through the Christmas season, the MPD said.
