The Philippine National Police (PNP) has stepped up security in Camarines Sur and nearby areas following a deadly landmine explosion in Balatan town that killed two soldiers and wounded three others.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said police units in the province have been placed on alert to prevent any similar incidents, adding that follow-up operations are being conducted against those responsible.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the two soldiers who lost their lives as a result of this attack. We in the PNP know how it feels because we also lost personnel in the anti-insurgency campaign,” said Nartatez.
“But we assure them and the rest of our kababayan that we will not stop until the communist insurgency problem in the country is addressed and for all the people in the countryside to live in peace,” he added
Aside from assisting the local military forces in pursuit operations, Nartatez said police investigators are now conducting investigations and preparing appropriate charges against those involved.
The explosion occurred in Barangay Cabungan on Dec. 19, killing two soldiers on the spot and injuring three others. Authorities confirmed that all the casualties were military personnel.
Nartatez said the PNP is closely coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the investigation and in securing affected and nearby areas. He added that additional police visibility and checkpoints have been established to deter any follow-up attacks and to reassure residents.
