Jamie Malonzo finds Gilas redemption with SEAG gold

BANGKOK — Being criticized — even ridiculed – for his struggles in his recent stints with the main Gilas Pilipinas team and his sudden departure from Barangay Ginebra, Jamie Malonzo has found some sort of redemption with a performance to remember in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.
Left without a team after underperforming in the Japan B.League, Malonzo answered the call for the SEA Games and saw a resurgence to his play which gave a glimpse of what he was used to before sustaining a torn calf injury.
Malonzo emerged as a potent two-way player for head coach Norman Black and had his best game in the tournament when he finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in the gold-clinching 70-64 win over Thailand.
“It’s been a journey and I'm happy I made the decision to play. It’s been all worth it so far,” said Malonzo after the game.
Malonzo was the catalyst to the huge second half assault from the Nationals who had to recover from a huge 13-point deficit against the host and their huge crowd inside the Nimibutr Arena.
The 6-foot-7 forward, however, took over for the Filipinos, sinking huge triples to carry the team back into the contest and eventually with the win.
Although he was one of the last cuts of the Gilas team that saw action in the first window of the FIBA 2027 World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Malonzo assured he was always ready to heed the call of the flag and the country.
“I’m just so happy we were able to get this done. No matter where I am or what team I’m playing for, if I’m representing the country, I’m going to play as hard as I can for the country and the flag,” said Malonzo.
“Obviously, bringing this back and defending what my teammates previously have done means a lot and it's very special, for sure. No matter what, I'm happy to be a part of whatever team I’m on,” he added.
“This is just an amazing feeling, so I’ll never say no to the country.”
