PCG: 3 dead, young boy missing as 2 motorbancas capsize off Masbate

Three people died while a three-year-old boy remains missing when two motorbancas were flipped over by “subasko” or squall (sudden violent gusts of wind) and big waves off Aroroy, Masbate, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Saturday, Dec. 20.
A report from the Coast Guard District Bicol (CGDBCL) said motorbancas “Three Seven” and “Three Seven II” capsized in the vicinity waters between Barangay Gumhang and Barangay Sawang on Dec. 18 due to rough sea conditions.
The boats were carrying 46 individuals in total. According to reports, the vessels set off without the required PCG clearance.
The PCG received information about the incident and deployed search and rescue (SAR) personnel from the Coast Guard Station Masbate and Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Aroroy.
Thirty-four passengers and eight crew members were rescued immediately after the incident while one fatality was recorded.
SAR operations continued on Dec. 19 which led to the retrieval of two more bodies.
As of Saturday, the PCG said SAR operations were still ongoing to find the missing boy.
The PCG assured the public that all necessary measures are being undertaken and that SAR operations will continue until the missing child is located.
The Coast Guard Aviation Force, Naval Forces Southern Luzon, Tactical Operations Group in Bicol Region, Aroroy Municipal Police Station, and Aroroy Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office have already been tapped to assist in the search.
Meanwhile, the PCG's Maritime Casualty Investigation Team (MCIT) has arrived in Masbate to carry out a formal inquiry.
To guarantee an impartial investigation, the sub-station commander of CGSS Aroroy has been relieved of duty.
