Marcos rejects claims tagging PH as terrorism 'training hotspot'
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. (PCO)
President Marcos pushed back against reports branding the Philippines as a terrorism training hotspot, saying such claims ignore years of decisive action by security forces to dismantle extremist networks and protect the country’s hard-earned peace.
Speaking at the 90th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, the President described the label as misleading and unacceptable, amid international reports linking the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia to the Philippines.
“We also reject in the strongest terms the recent misleading claims that portray our country as a training hotspot for terrorism,” Marcos said Friday, Dec. 19.
“For years, we have acted decisively to dismantle terrorist networks, to secure communities, and to sustain our hard-earned peace. To dismiss these gains with unfounded speculation is not acceptable,” he added.
The President’s remarks came after authorities confirmed that the two armed men who carried out a deadly shooting spree during the Jewish Hannukkah festival at Bondi Beach had stayed at a hotel in Davao City for nearly a month before the attack, which left at least 15 people dead.
The incident, which unfolded in a busy coastal area popular with locals and tourists, prompted heightened security alerts in Australia and sparked international media reports examining the suspects’ travel history, including their stay in the southern Philippines.
Philippine officials have stressed that the suspects’ brief stay does not support claims that the country serves as a base or training ground for terrorist operations.
Despite this, Marcos said the Philippines will continue strengthening its security posture and will not allow deceptive narratives to undermine national resolve.
“Nevertheless, we remain vigilant. We will not let deceptive narratives distract us nor weaken our resolve,” he said.
The President emphasized that the AFP has consistently delivered results in both internal and external security, helping sustain peace in communities once affected by insurgency and extremist violence.
Honoring AFP service, sacrifice
During the anniversary rites, Marcos also recognized AFP personnel awarded for bravery, innovation, and distinguished service, saying they continue to set the standard for professionalism and dedication.
“Araw-araw na naglilingkod. Araw-araw na naninindigan. Kaya sa ngalan ng mamamayang Pilipino, maraming salamat sa inyong galing, tapang, at malasakit (Every day you serve. Every day you stand your ground. So on behalf of the Filipino people, thank you for your skill, courage, and dedication),” he said.
The President likewise reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that soldiers are properly compensated and equipped, citing Executive Order No. 107, which updates the base pay of military and uniformed personnel.
The pay adjustments will take effect in January 2026, with additional tranches scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
“This can be just one of the many ways that we show our gratitude for the service that you have rendered to our country,” the President said.
