Marcos lauds AFP as pillar of peace, sovereignty on its 90th anniversary
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. (PCO)
President Marcos has praised the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for safeguarding the country’s freedom and sovereignty, saying national life continues in peace because soldiers remain on duty.
Speaking at the AFP’s 90th anniversary rites at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, the President recognized the more than 160,000 men and women of the armed forces for their role in protecting the Republic amid both peace and conflict.
“The nation is safe because of you standing guard,” he said.
“Our children go to school, our livelihoods thrive, and our holidays are peaceful because you are on duty,” he added.
Security gains
Marcos said the AFP delivered results over the past year in addressing both internal and external security threats.
“Our defense posture has been strengthened through your presence, preparedness, and professionalism,” he said.
He cited the expansion of AFP cybersecurity operations, which he said helped secure government systems against evolving digital and technological threats.
The President also credited the military’s humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations for saving lives, restoring order, and delivering hope to communities affected by calamities.
‘What is ours is ours’
Marcos said the AFP continues to carry out cooperative maritime activities, showing the Philippines’ commitment to international law and responsible state behavior.
“We remain firm and clear with our stance: what is ours is ours. We stand our ground, with purpose and without apology,” he said.
He also rejected what he described as misleading claims portraying the Philippines as a training hotspot for terrorism, saying such narratives undermine years of decisive action against extremist networks.
Support for troops, pay hike highlighted
Marcos reiterated the administration’s commitment to supporting the welfare of soldiers, including through improved compensation and equipment.
He cited Executive Order No. 107, which updates the base pay of military and uniformed personnel and will be implemented in tranches starting January 2026, with further adjustments in 2027 and 2028.
The President said these measures are meant to recognize the sacrifices of those who defend the nation.
Peace felt by Filipinos
As the Christmas season approaches, Marcos reminded soldiers that their service allows Filipinos to celebrate in peace and security.
“Nagdiriwang ang sambayanang Pilipino nang may panatag na loob dahil alam naming nariyan kayo—nagbabantay at handang tumugon para sa ating bansa (The Filipino people celebrate with peace of mind because we know you are there—standing guard and ready to respond for our country),” he said.
