A heated debate over whether ₱500 is enough for Noche Buena resurfaced in the Tanong ng Pilipino segment of CIA with BA, following the viral, widely criticized statement by Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Cristina Roque. The issue struck a nerve among Filipinos already burdened by rising prices and daily financial struggles.

Addressing the controversy, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano said he fully understands the public backlash, acknowledging how difficult life has become for many families. “I fully understand ‘yung mga kritiko. Ang hirap na ng buhay, hindi naman [sa] lahat ng grocery, lahat ng palengke, mabibili mo ‘yan,” he said.

Cayetano also pointed out that statements like these can feel more insensitive when coming from high-ranking officials. “And ‘pag ikaw ay isang Secretary, nandyan ka sa taas, sasabihin mo ‘yan?” he remarked, highlighting the gap between policy discussions and everyday realities.

However, the senator offered a more nuanced view, stressing that the issue lay largely in how the message was communicated and the context in which it was said. According to him, timing, tone, and empathy matter especially when messages come from those in power.

“But just because I also know the Secretary, hindi mga maluluho na tao ‘yan, hindi mga lutang, etc.,” Cayetano said, adding that the intention behind the statement may have been misunderstood. He believed the message was meant to emphasize togetherness rather than dismiss hardship. “I think she was trying to convey na after looking at the list, even if you have P500 — [though] many people don’t have 500 — kahit papano, you can share a meal together.”

Boy Abunda also weighed in, saying that beyond sensitivity, the broader social climate cannot be ignored. “Even the sensitivity point to me is something debatable. But the times kasi e. Paano mo ‘ko sasabihan na kasya ang limandaang piso para sa Noche Buena e nakakakita ako ng mga ninanakaw na pera sa isang mesa, nakakakita ako ng mga male-maleta [na pera],” he said, pointing to inequality and corruption that fuel public frustration.

As the discussion ended, Cayetano shared a deeper Christmas reflection anchored on what he called “RE.” “Christmas message ko is ‘RE.’ Let’s repent, let’s have a recollection, let’s redeem,” he said, noting that real change begins with reflection, not slogans. “You have to revise… you have to recollect… you have to redeem it.”

For him, Christmas is also about quietness and clarity amid noise and controversy. “So etong Pasko, it’s also about quietness, peace, thinking ano bang vision,” he said, before wishing viewers a meaningful holiday focused on faith, family, and gratitude.
