BACOLOD CITY – The Sagay City government in Negros Occidental ushered in the holiday season with a Christmas fair at the public plaza, highlighting the city’s identity as a coastal and creative city.
Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, Vice Mayor Narwin Javelosa, and Negros Occidental second district Rep. Alfredo Marañon III led the ceremonial lighting of a jellyfish-inspired Christmas tree, set beside a giant ‘’parol’’ (star) and ‘’belen’’ (Nativity scene) that completed the festive display.
The plaza glowed with marine-themed décor, coastal elements, and soft blue, white, and yellow lights coinciding with the theme “Keep on Shining.”
Cueva said the theme reflects the resilience, unity, and compassion of the people of Sagay, especially in challenging times.
He emphasized that the city’s true light comes not from decorations, but from its people whose dedication continues to guide the city forward.
Javelosa said the holiday lights symbolize the inner strength of Sagaynons, noting that even small acts of kindness can inspire and uplift the community.
He added that public service is about letting one’s light guide and support others.
Marañon highlighted the resilience of Sagaynons, citing the four tropical cyclones the city endured in recent weeks.
Despite these challenges, he said there is still much to be thankful for in 2025 and encouraged residents to shine through their talents and character, saying a Sagaynon can lead and shine.
The opening night featured a 10-minute fireworks display, followed by the Iwag-Sagay Pasundayag streetdance competition of the Department of Education (DepEd)-Schools Division of Sagay. Student performers showcased illuminated, under-the-sea–themed costumes and props.
Christmas performances were also staged by the State University of Northern Negros Chorale, the SUNN Integrated Performing Arts Company, and winners of the Voice Idol of Sagay.
The Christmas fair runs until Dec. 23 with nightly activities at the public plaza.
Meanwhile, the Christmas Bazaar at the Taliambong Activity Center is open daily, featuring 18 MSME stalls offering local crafts, food products, and holiday items.
Nightly acoustic and full-band performances are held at the promenade stage until the fair’s closing.
Cueva encouraged residents to participate in the festivities and support local entrepreneurs and artists.
