BANGKOK — The Philippine beach volleyball and bowling teams emerged victorious and claimed gold medals on the penultimate day of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games here Friday, Dec. 19.
The quartet of Sisi Rondina, Bernadeth Pons, Sunny Villapando and Dij Rodriguez swept Thailand, 2-0, in the women’s beach volley final, while Mark Jesus San Jose, Kenneth Chua, Marc Custodio and Artegal Barrientos topped Thailand in the men’s bowling team final.
A dominant first game set the tone for the PH beach volley team as the Team A tandem of Pons and Rondina blasted the Thai pair, 21-17, 21-15, on the Jomtien Beach in Chonburi.
The duo of Villapando and Rodriguez then followed suit and edged their Thai counterparts, 21-13, 17-21, 15-6 , to claim the gold against the eight-time champions.
Over at the Blu-O Rhythm & Bow,l, the PH team scored a total of 981 pinfalls to dominate Thailand which finished with 865 points.
Barrientos notched the highest points for the Filipinos with 257 points followed by the 256 and 246 of Custodio and San Jose. Chua, on the other hand, fired 222.
