San Miguel extended its hot streak after shutting down Meralco, 113-104, to keep the top spot in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila Friday evening, Dec. 19.
Locked in a tight battle early in the second quarter, the Beermen shifted to higher gears with a 14-7 blitz and seized a 49-41 halftime lead which they stretched to 18, 78-60, in the third.
Aside from marking its ninth consecutive win, San Miguel closed out its elimination as the No. 1 seed with a 9-2 card, edging Rain or Shine (8-3), while Meralco dropped to 6-5 to seventh place to tie with NLEX.
June Mar Fajardo stamped his class with another double-double performance off 24 points and 15 rebounds with four assists and three blocks. CJ Perez also scored 24 that went with four rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
Don Trollano had 21 points along with three rebounds, one assist, and one block, while Jeric Teng and Juami Tiongson combined for 13 points.
CJ Cansino topscored for Meralco after listing 21 points on top of three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Bong Quinto, Raymond Almazan, and Jeff Comia added 11 points each.
Brandon Bates and Chris Newsome chipped in 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Bolts who were hoping to keep their slim chance of securing a twice-to-beat advantage.
Meanwhile, Calvin Oftana caught fire from the distance and powered TNT over Blackwater, 113-96, to solidify their bid for a quarterfinal bonus.
The Tropang 5G kept their momentum going and dominated the Bossing throughout the contest en route to a 7-3 card that gave them a solid hold on the No. 3 spot.
Oftana steered TNT with 25 points, while Roger Pogoy and Henry Galinato backstopped him with 18 and 14 points. Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser and Jordan Heading also provided double-digit scoring with 12 and 11 points.
Troy Malilin paced Blackwater with 20 points, while Sedrick Barefield, Christian David, and James Una conspired for 38 points in a losing cause as the Bossing concluded their run with a 1-10 tally.
