BANGKOK — The Philippine team entered the final stretch of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games with the triathlon squad and Sibol national team leading an early four-gold haul on Wednesday, Dec. 17 here.
The Filipino triathletes completed a huge sweep of the team relay events to deliver three gold medals, while the Sibol men’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang team stamped its class for its fourth SEAG gold.
The victories allowed the Nationals to finally break through the 30-gold medal barrier — something that Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino pretty much expected, especially heading into the last three days of the competitions.
“We still have a good chance of winning more medals. I predict the team can still win 15 (gold medals). We have basketball, boxing, speedskating," said Tolentino.
With the victories, Team Philippines has now leapfrogged Malaysia for the fifth spot in the medal standings after improving to 32 golds, 46 silvers and 99 bronzes.
The women’s triathlon relay team composed of Kim Mangrobang, Kira Ellis and Raven Alcoseba stamped their class in the race which they only finished in just one hour, 14 minutes and 10 seconds.
Their time was over 30 seconds clear of their closest pursuer in Indonesia, which clocked 1:10:48 for the silver, followed by Singapore with a time of 1:12:00.
The men’s team composed of Aki Lorbes, Matthew Hermosa and Fer Casares was just as brilliant after they timed 1:04:05 to edge Singapore, which clocked 1:04:15 to settle for the silver, and Indonesia, which recorded 1:04:35.
The mixed relay team, consisting of Ellis, Casares, Alcoseba and Andrew Kim Remolino was dominant as well after they copped the gold.
Over at the Chulalongkorn University Book Center, the crew of Sanford Vinuya, Kiel Soriano, Karl Nepomuceno, Jaypee Dela Cruz, Alston Pabico and John Carlo Roma completed a sweet sweep of Malaysia, 4-0, in the gold medal match of men’s MLBB.
The Philippine esports team is gunning for its second gold medal in the Games as the women’s team takes on Malaysia in the best-of-seven finals currently being held as of press time.
