BANGKOK – After a pair of heartbreaks and near-misses that even became more painful with the questionable judging and officiating, a pair of Filipino boxers were finally advancing to the gold medal round.
Jay Brian Baricuatro and Flint Jara advanced to the gold medal round of their respective weight classes in dominant fashion to assure the Philippine boxing team a pair of silvers in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games at the Chulalongkon University Sports Center here.
Buoyed by the loud cheers from the Filipino crowd that included the members of the Gilas Pilipinas women’s squad, both Baricuatro and Jara put on a show as they dominated their way to an assured silver medal for the PH boxing team.
Baricuatro scored a first-round stoppage of Timor Leste’s Antonio da Silva in the men’s 48-kilogram division while Jara defeated Singapore’s Ang Jin Yang in the 54kg class via unanimous 5-0 decision.
Baricuatro was quick to assert his might in the contest as a pair of vicious hooks that followed up an earlier booming counter right proved to be enough for the referee to stop the fight with five seconds left in the opening frame.
“Nung natamaan ako ng unang suntok niya, alam ko talagang may ilalamang yung lakas ko sa kanya so prinessure ko na agad. Nakita ko sa mata niya na nagdadalawang isip sya kung susuntok pa ba siya o hindi,” said Baricuatro after the fight.
Jara, likewise, slugged it out with his Singaporean opponent through the first round before a right straight from him scored a standing eight count. The 23-year-old pug, hardly bothered by the cut he sustained in the previous match, continued with the onslaught to win the bout.
Getting a huge sigh of relief after finally advancing to the gold medal match, both Jara and Baricuatro will now have to claim the gold medal against host team Thailand.
Baricuatro will be facing up against Thai fighter Phlongaurai Thitiwat while Jara will take on Saengphet Thanarat in the final.
“Gagawan namin ng paraan. Maghahanap talaga kami ng butas against sa Thai boxer kasi maliban sa magaling sila, talagang malakas din yung judging nila eh. Kailangan ng mas convincing na panalo,” Jara said smiling.
Their victories alleviated the pain of the earlier losses of Riza Pasuit and Ofelia Magno.
Magno absorbed a 4-1 defeat against Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi of Vietnam in the women’s 48-kilogram class while Pasuit succumbed to Thai bet Apisada Tantawa, 5-0 in the 60kg division.
They both settled for bronze medals joining Hergie Bacyadan, Nesthy Petecio and Mark Ashley Fajardo with the same honors.
