Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon can't help but feel alluded to in a video posted by showbiz personality Marietta “Pokwang” Subong as the latter addressed the viral road rage incident that involved her brother.
"We take exception to the remarks made by Ms. Marietta “Pokwang” Subong in her recent video statement relating to the involvement of her brother, Carlo Subong, in a road rage incident in Antipolo City," Ridon said in a statement Wednesday morning, Dec. 17.
"In her video message, Ms. Subong alluded to a certain lawmaker who had been speaking on the road rage incident, falsely alleging that photographs of her entire family were posted online. She further made unfounded threats of cyberlibel and cyberbullying arising from this supposed disclosure," he said.
"There is no one else Ms. Subong could be alluding to except me, as I have been consistently speaking on road abuse issues, including the e-bike ban and the present road rage incident," Ridon said.
"I therefore respond to her remarks directly and squarely," continued the outspoken lawyer-legislator.
First, Ridon pointed out that it should be Carlo Subong and not Pokwang who shoild be apologizing for the incident. In a viral video that the solon also shared on his Facebook, Subong hit Crispin Villamor on the head after the latter's cart made contact with his white Toyota Hilux (plate no.NHU-9321).
"It was Mr. Subong who consciously chose to commit grave threats, inflict physical injuries, and engage in acts of child abuse against Crispin Villamor and his daughter during the road rage incident," Ridon said.
"Second, it is untrue that photographs of Ms. Subong’s entire family were posted online. What were posted were photographs of Carlo Subong—the individual involved in the incident—whose actions constitute grave threats, physical injuries, and child abuse against Crispin Villamor and his daughter," he noted.
The party-list solon says the public "has every right to know the identity of a person who commits crimes against ordinary Filipinos".
"Third, Congress has full oversight powers over matters at the intersection of transportation and public safety, including road rage incidents. The geographic location of the incident is irrelevant. Our oversight authority exists whether the incident occurred in Antipolo, Bicol, or anywhere else in the country," he further said.
As to Pokwang's threats of cyberlibel and cyberbullying cases, Ridon says he doesn't take it lightly.
"There can be no cyberlibel or cyberbullying where statements are factual and based on publicly available information," he said, adding that commentary has been "from legitimate public scrutiny of this incident".
"The photographs of Mr. Subong are publicly accessible. The LTO (Land Transportation Office) Show Cause Order is a public document. Mr. Subong’s actions were committed in full public view," Ridon explained.
"These are public offenses that implicate public interest and accountability, and cannot be treated as purely private matters subject solely to the agreement or settlement of the parties involved," he added.
In his parting shot to Pokwang, Ridon said: "Hindi kayo ang biktima dito. Ang biktima dito ay si Crispin at ang kanyang anak. Ang biktima dito ay ang mga ordinaryong Pilipinong inaabuso ng mga katulad ni Carlo Subong
(You are not the victim here. The victim here is Crispin and his child. The victims here are the ordinary Filipinos who are being abused by people like Carlo Subong.)
