BANGKOK — Alex Eala is looking to rebound from a bronze medal finish in the mixed doubles when she vies for the gold mint in the women’s singles, just as the Gilas Pilipinas teams shoot for the finals in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games on Thursday, Dec. 18.
With Team Philippines bracing for the big push in the final two days of the competitions, the Filipinos are banking on the success of Eala to spearhead the potential gold haul in the penultimate day of the Games.
Eala is facing up against hometown bet Sawangkaew Mananchaya for the chance to claim the gold mint after only bagging bronze in the Hanoi edition.
The 20-year-old Filipina ace actually had the chance to bag the precious medal on Wednesday, Dec. 17 but she and partner Francis Casey Alcantara fell at the hands of Thai tandem of Pacharin Cheapchandej and Pawit Sornlaksup, 7-5, 5-7, 7-10.
“Obviously, initial feelings are disappointment when you lose and give it your all. But, no regrets. I think we did everything we could, in the end doubles could be a game of chance and I think our opponents played really well,” said Eala.
Meanwhile, Gilas is looking to assert its mastery in the 5-on-5 competitions when it seeks a place in the gold medal match at the Nimibutr Arena.
The men’s team, mentored by head coach Norman Black, is hopeful that the extra two days of training would help the team in terms of developing their chemistry especially that they are set to face the winner between Vietnam and Indonesia in the qualification for the semis.
The match between the two squads are being played as of press time, although any of the two is expected to pose a threat against the Filipinos.
Gilas needed a huge fourth quarter push to take down the Vietnamese, 78-67, in their preliminary match while Indonesia was the team that denied the Nationals the gold in the 2021 edition of the Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
On the distaff side, the Gilas women’s team has Indonesia standing on its way for a spot in the gold medal match.
Indonesia defeated Singapore, 77-37, to arrange the semis match against the Filipinas, who came out of the preliminaries unscathed with a 2-0 record.
