BANGKOK — The 33rd Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Rolly Nathaniel Tecson is hopeful that the country’s victory could spur more interest and support for the Philippine shooting team.
That, after the PH shooters, despite being one of the underrated sports in terms of delivering medals to the national team, shocked with an impressive four-gold haul on Monday, Dec. 15.
Tecson was on target in the men’s practical shooting standard division, while Erin Matter Nicor was as brilliant in the women’s open division. Edcel Gino and Genesis Pible, likewise, reigned supreme in the men’s and women’s production optics at the Eastern National Sports Training Center in Chonburi.
“First time to eh,” said Tecson. “Actually, nakaka-proud kasi ngayon, siguro ma-recognize kami ngayon ng government.”
“Before kasi may World Championship kami which is in South Africa this last September pero di kasi siya ganun ka-supported ng government eh,” he added.
In all, the PH practical shooting team had four golds, a silver, and three bronzes while the pistol and rifle team finished with a silver and bronze. The shotgun (skeet and trap) team, on the other hand, chipped in two silvers.
“Sana. Sana. (Magkaroon ng bigger support),” said Tecson.
“Kasi sobrang laki ng chance natin dito and sobrang laki ng advantage natin dito sa sport na ito. Sobrang daming Pilipino na nage-excel dito sa sport na ito which is practical for them,” he stressed.
