PLDT: AI to power 8-12% of Philippine economy by 2030
Telecommunications giant PLDT Inc. expects artificial intelligence (AI) to be a significant contributor to the country’s economy in the near term, as it pushes for key reforms to unlock the sector’s full potential.
PLDT and Smart Head of Network Strategy and Architecture Eric Santiago estimated that the fast-growing AI could account for eight to 12 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) as early as 2030.
Santiago said this growth would bank on AI boosting the country’s productivity, as well as the introduction of new exports and services aligned with the technology.
"It's not just about the buzzwords, but about bottom lines and better lives," he said in a statement.
With important reforms in place, the Philippines could harness the AI industry as a force to uplift the lives of Filipinos, ultimately driving economic and business growth.
For PLDT, this means enhancing and aligning local talent with global standards in advanced technology to ensure that the country is not left behind.
"Upskilling our people is essential. AI fluency must be accessible to all so we can build the bench needed for long-term innovation,” said Santiago.
He said this includes encouraging Filipino AI experts working abroad to return to the country and help in training the next generation by offering attractive incentives.
With recent corruption issues dampening investor confidence, Santiago stressed that strong governance remains critical even in a sector typically beyond the government’s reach.
"Trust is fundamental. A resilient governance framework ensures that every API (application programming interface) integration, every connection point, and every AI-enabled system remains safeguarded," he said.
Santiago said good governance in the country’s AI framework is important in attracting investors and protecting the people from potential threats.
He also cited the importance of enabling infrastructure to tap the benefits of AI, adding that PLDT is already well ahead in this area.
PLDT and wireless unit Smart have rolled out a 5G Standalone network, distributed edge capabilities, and resiliency solutions such as laser-based, point-to-multipoint, and satellite connectivity designed to support the heavy workload of AI.
“PLDT's continued investment in network infrastructure and innovation underscores the Group's broader commitment to national digital transformation,” Santiago said.
"We are building networks that stay intelligent and operational despite disruptions, ensuring continuous service,” he added.
