The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Tuesday, December 16, that at least three weather systems will continue to affect large parts of the country this week, bringing cloudy skies, scattered rains, and possible flooding or landslides in several areas.
In its December 16 weather forecast, PAGASA said the shear line is affecting the eastern section of Central Luzon, while the northeast monsoon (amihan) continues to dominate Northern Luzon and the rest of Central Luzon. The easterlies, meanwhile, are influencing the remaining regions of the country.
Areas under rain due to the shear line
Aurora and Quezon will experience cloudy to overcast skies with widespread rain and isolated thunderstorms, with a risk of flash floods or landslides due to moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall, PAGASA said.
Parts of Calabarzon may also experience isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms associated with the shear line, with possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
Easterlies to affect Visayas, Mindanao
Meanwhile, the Bicol Region, Caraga, Davao Region, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Southern Leyte are expected to have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the easterlies.
PAGASA warned residents in these areas of possible flooding and landslides, especially during periods of heavy rain.
‘Amihan’ to bring rains over Northern Luzon
PAGASA also said the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” will bring cloudy skies with rains over Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and Ifugao, with rainfall ranging from light to moderate and at times heavy.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila, the Ilocos Region, the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of Cagayan Valley, and the rest of Central Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains, with no significant weather impact expected.
Weather outlook
PAGASA said that from December 15 to 17, the shear line will continue to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms over the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Aurora, and Quezon.
The Cordillera Administrative Region and the rest of Cagayan Valley will also have cloudy skies with scattered rains, while the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon.
Mindanao and the rest of the Visayas will generally experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with localized rainshowers or thunderstorms, PAGASA added.
By December 18 to 19, cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms will persist over the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and Quezon due to the shear line.
Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region will continue to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains, while the Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon will remain partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated light rains caused by the northeast monsoon.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with brief rainshowers or thunderstorms.
PAGASA advised the public to remain alert for possible flash floods and landslides, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall, and to monitor official weather updates for further advisories.
