PNP warns vs online selling of 'Goodbye Chismosa', other illegal firecrackers
Police Col. Rex B. Buyucan, chief of the Explosives Management Division of the police's Firearms and Explosives Office, discusses the measures being undertaken to prevent the sale and proliferation of illegal firecrackers during a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has strengthened its partnership with online selling platforms and delivery services to prevent the sale of illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials.
Police Col. Rex B. Buyucan, chief of the Explosive Management Division of the Firearms and Explosive Office, said they discussed the measures with representatives of the online selling and delivery services in a meeting with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) last week.
“There was a discussion on the aspect of the delivery of prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials because what we are protecting here is the safety of the community,” said Buyucan.
He said the PNP’s Anti-Cybercrime Group has already stepped up its cyber-patrolling in running after those selling illegal firecrackers on various online selling platforms. In fact, he said there were already apprehensions made in the past weeks.
Buyucan said they also strengthened the measures to prevent the selling of the illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials especially on the days leading to the New Year celebration.
The use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials is a tradition in the country over a belief that it drives away bad luck and evil spirit.
“We have regional offices that focus on the inspection of these materials in coordination with various government agencies like the Bureau of Fire Protection and local government units,” said Buyucan.
Buyucan said they already coordinated with the Bureau of Customs in intensifying the operation against the importation of illegal firecrackers and other pyrotechnic materials.
Prohibited
Among the prohibited firecrackers are watusi, pop-pop, pla-pla, piccolo, five star, giant bawang, giant whistle bomb, atomic bomb, large-size Judas Belt, super lolo and Goodbye Bading.
Also prohibited were Lolo Thunder, Mother Rockets, Bin Laden, Kalabsi, Super Yolanda, Boga, Kwiton, Hello Columbia, King Kong, Dart Bomb, GPH Nuclear, Tuna and Goodbye Chismosa.
He said the penalty for its manufacture and sale is up to P20,000 fine and imprisonment of six months to one year.
