Meralco opens 200-MW baseload renewable energy bidding
Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said it is seeking generation companies (GenCos) to participate in its 200-megawatt (MW) baseload renewable energy (RE) bidding.
In a statement on Monday, Dec. 15, Meralco said it is looking to contract its baseload RE capacity through a competitive selection process (CSP) to comply with its renewable portfolio standards (RPS).
A CSP is a method for distribution utilities (DUs) to auction off power supply agreements (PSAs) to ensure the most cost-effective and reliable supply of electricity.
GenCos interested in applying may submit expressions of interest by Jan. 6, 2026, as the pre-bid conference is scheduled to begin on Jan. 15 next year.
Bid submissions will close on Feb. 16, 2026.
The bidding was launched after the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a certificate of conformity (CoC) approving the procurement, in line with the company’s power supply procurement plan.
The DOE earlier granted clearance from the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) to begin the CSP.
“This CSP is consistent with Meralco’s ongoing efforts to expand its supply portfolio sourced from RE sources while securing Meralco’s RPS compliance through a competitive and transparent bidding process,” said Jose Ronald Valles, Meralco senior vice president and head of regulatory management.
Aside from the 200-MW renewable capacity CSP, the company is also awaiting two other supply auctions.
Meralco earlier said it hopes to begin the 600-MW baseload supply CSP by Feb. 26, 2026. These two CSPs were initially intended to begin this year.
So far, the firm has secured 1,536 MW of renewable capacity from different suppliers, which is well above its 1,500-MW target.
RE makes up 22 percent of Meralco’s supply portfolio by 2030.
Moreover, the energy firm is looking to increase its capital expenditure (capex) moving forward, as it is eyeing up to ₱25 billion for current power developments, substations, and other necessary infrastructure upgrades.
