Marcos orders PCG to deploy vessels in strategic areas to ensure fishermen's safety
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. (John Louie Abrina)
President Marcos has ordered the deployment of Philippine vessels in strategic locations to ensure that Filipino fishermen are safe at sea.
This, after the recent water cannon attack made by China Coast Guard against Filipino fishermen near Escoda Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, injuring three fishermen.
"[A]ng ipinagbilin po at ang direktiba ng Pangulo ay unahin ang kaligtasan ng ating mga kababayan, ang mga mangingisda na minsan ay nanganganib ang kanilang buhay (What the President has instructed and directed is to prioritize the safety of our fellow citizens, especially the fishermen whose lives are at times put at risk)," Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a briefing on Monday, Dec. 15.
"At ipinag-utos din po na magkaroon ng deployment sa mga strategic location para po mabantayan at mabigyan ng proteksyon ang ating mga mangingisda (He has also ordered the deployment in strategic locations to monitor and provide protection to our fishermen)," Castro added.
The President, according to Castro, also reiterated his support for the acquisition of more patrol vessels.
"At sinusuportahan po ng Pangulo ang pagbili ng mga coast guard vessels para mas marami po ang makapagbantay din po sa ating interes at interes ng ating mga kababayan (The President likewise supports the acquisition of coast guard vessels so that more assets can be deployed to safeguard our interests and the interests of our fellow citizens)," Castro said.
The Palace official also said that the recent incident calls for unity among Filipinos.
"At ito ho ang panahon upang ang bawat Pilipino ay magkaisa, iangat ang interes ng bansa natin, iangat ang interes ng kapwa Pilipino natin (This is the time for every Filipino to unite, to uphold the interests of our nation, and to uphold the interests of our fellow Filipinos)," Castro said.
On Friday, Dec. 12, three fishermen were injured after Chinese vessels fired water cannons and carried out dangerous maneuvers against Filipino fishing boats near Escoda Shoal, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) revealed on Saturday.
According to PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela, the fishermen were allegedly harassed by China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels with bow numbers “21559” and “21562” along with several Chinese maritime militia (CMM) boats.
High-pressure water cannon blasts injured the three fishermen and left them with bruises and open wounds while two fishing boats also sustained damage, Tarriela said.
