Inso, Ando, PH shooters lead Day 6 gold rush for Team PH

The Philippine shooters hit the mark and bagged four gold medals just as Jones Inso and Elreen Ando topped their wushu and weightlifting events to spearhead a six-gold harvest that hiked Team Philippines’ haul to 23.
Rolly Nathaniel Tecson was on target in the men’s practical shooting standard division, while Erin Matter Nicor was as brilliant in the women’s open division. Edcel Gino and Genesis Pible, likewise, reigned supreme in the men’s and women’s production optics at the Eastern National Sports Training Center in Chonburi.
Over at the Ratthaprasasanphakdi Building Government Complex, Inso displayed his fine form in tajiquan with 9.780 points and taijijian with 9.783 to garner a total score of 19.563 points and top the 13-man event.
Ando, on the other hand, lifted a total 227 kilograms to top the women’s 63-kg class and give the Philippine weightlifting team its first gold mint after only settling for a silver through the first two days of competitions at the Chonburi Sports School.
Further solidifying her case as the next big thing for Philippine weightlifting, Ando lifted 98kg in snatch and 127kg in the clean-and-jerk. Her victory erased the bitter taste of Hidilyn Diaz’s loss in the women’s 58kg division.
“Siyempre, number one, nagpapasalamat ako kay God. Binigay niya talaga yung pinag-pray kong sana maging gold na naman tayo,” said Ando, who also had a gold in the last edition of the biennial meet.
Monday's gold rush came a day after a lackluster showing for Team Philippines where it only won two golds courtesy of Agatha Wong in wushu and the judo team in the mixed team event.
Team PH is primed for a big leap in the medal standings with some final events also being held in athletics and swimming as of press time. Aside from the 23 golds, Team PH has 32 silvers and 71 bronzes as of 5 p.m.
Over at the National Tennis Development Center, Team Philippines' flag bearer Alex Eala opened her tournament in style, defeating Shihomi Li Xuan Hong, 6-3,6-1, in the women’s singles tennis.
Eala had to shake off the cobwebs as, after a 0-2 start, the 20-year-old tennis ace dominated up to the finish — much to the delight of the Filipino crowd in attendance.
“I’m very happy with the first round, presented good challenges and I'm happy with uhm, wala, masaya ako sa crowd, madami nanood. Maraming salamat sa suporta,” Eala who is teaming up with Alberto Lim in the mixed double event that is being held as of press time.
Meanwhile, also set to see action for Team PH on Tuesday, Dec. 16, is another gold medal favorite in EJ Obiena, who will be defending his pole vault title at the Suphachalasai Stadium.
