Always ready to answer the call since his rookie year, Gerry Abadiano has embraced all kinds of roles handed to him by the University of the Philippines.
And his willingness to adapt to the system and make way for his teammates became instrumental for the Fighting Maroons' success.
Emerging from the shadows of former State U stars JD Cagulangan, Carl Tamayo, and Malick Diouf, and now one of the go-to guys in the UAAP Season 88 finals, Abadiano finds added motivation as he plays his final year alongside Harold Alarcon, Reyland Torres, Janjan Felicilda, and Terrence Fortea.
“Sa akin kung ano lang ‘yong bibigay ng depensa kukunin ko lang, siguro mas gutom lang kami manalo ngayong Game 2 kasi ‘yon nga talo kami no’ng Game 1,” said Abadiano who powered the State U to a 66-63 Game 2 win over La Salle at Mall of Asia Arena Sunday, Dec. 14.
“Siyempre last year namin, personally, last year ko, ayoko naman na sa last year ko hindi ko bibigay ‘yong pinaka-best ko, ‘yong best namin,” he added.
The IloIlo City native showcased his signature mid-range jumper in the waning minutes of the final period where he scored six of his 17 points which was highlighted by a jumpshot that gave UP a 65-62 edge.
Abadiano’s clutch baskets kept the two-peat bid of UP alive with the series going to a rubber match this Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 3:30 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“‘Yong experience na nakukuha namin no’ng mga last championships, malaking bagay ‘yon para samin and para sa ibang teammates namin na mai-share namin sa kanila,” Abadiano continued.
“Kung ano ba talaga ‘yong [mga kailangang gawin] sa Game 3, sabi nga ni coach Chris [Luanzon] lahat ng bata ‘yon ‘yong pinanapangarap talaga, and talagang blessed lang kami na meron kaming opportunity na ma-experience ‘to,” he added.
