Kent Pastrana fulfilled her vow of winning back the UAAP crown after University of Santo Tomas took down National University, 79-64, in Game 3 of the Season 88 women's finals at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Sunday, Dec. 14.
Pastrana, who was emotional after the Tigresses lost the crown against the Camille Clarin-led Lady Bulldogs last year, delivered key baskets that gave UST a comfortable 65-44 lead which was enough to leave NU behind and grab their 13th overall title and second in a span of three seasons.
Also doing damage for the Espana-based squad were Oma Onianwa, Eka Soriano, and Karylle Sierba.
It was also the Tigresses’ second straight victory in the finale after yielding to the Lady Bulldogs in Game 1 (84-79), a loss that ended UST’s 14th game winning streak since the elimination round.
“We played with our hearts… we did our system,” said UST head coach Haydee Ong. “I’m very happy na nakuha namin ‘to this is not only for UST, this also for [the country’s] women’s basketball.”
Pastrana turned her heartbreak into inspiration that fueled her all-out performance of 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, one block, and five steals, while Onianwa backed her up with 15 points on top of seven rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.
“Sobrang happy lang kami kasi ‘yong sakripisyo namin ng years na magkakasama kami ay nagbunga,” said Pastrana, who named as Finals MVP in his final year, alongside Soriano in UAAP.
“Di ko makukuha ‘tong award na ‘to dahil kay Lord, pati narin sa mga teammates and coaches ko,” she added.
Soriano, Sierba, and CJ Maglupay chipped in 10 points each, while Nicole Danganan and Brig Santos added seven and five points, respectively.
Kristine Cayabyab gave her all and scored 21 points with six rebounds, one assist, and one steal, Aloha Betanio and Marga Villanueva added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Karl Ann Pingol, the season MVP, concluded her collegiate career with six points, six rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals in a losing cause.
