BANGKOK — The Philippine judo team made sure to leave Thailand in style, delivering another gold medal in the mixed team event to provide some positives to a relatively underwhelming fifth day of competitions in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games on Sunday, Dec. 14 here.
The team composed of Gabriel Quitain, Randy Ferrer, John Viron Ferrer, Rhyan Garay, Chino Sy, Esleken Kedo, Joemari-Heart Rafael, Leah Jhane Lopez, Khrizzie Pabulayan, Margaret Fajardo and Maxine Mababangloob defeated the host team Thailand in the final.
It was only the second victory for Team Philippines after Agatha Wong won in wushu during the morning session which was a letdown after the team had a combined 10 golds in the last two days.
Chances weren’t lacking for the PH team, though, as the PH tankers claimed two silvers and two bronzes in the penultimate day of the swimming competitions.
Of course, leading the charge for the swimmers was Kayla Sanchez who bagged the second place in the women's 50-meter freestyle while teammate Heather White claimed third.
The two were also part of the team that clinched the silver in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay while Logan Noguchi was the other medal winner in the men’s 50-meter freestyle.
Coming close but just couldn’t get over the hump were the marathoners of the athletics team as Arlan Arbois and Richard Salano finished with a silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s competition while Artjoy Torregosa added a silver on the distaff side.
Albert Ian Delos Santos, meanwhile, delivered the first medal for the Philippine weightlifting team after bagging the silver medal in the men’s 71kg class. His silver finish came as huge consolation after Hidilyn Diaz failed to land a podium in the 58kg division.
Felix Pontino had a silver and a bronze in the extreme jetski mixed ski 1500 stock event and mixed ski GP. Also claiming a silver was Michael Angelo Fernandez in the men’s 10-meter air pistol.
The Philippine men’s and women’s tennis teams bagged bronzes while Angelo Ventus also claimed the same medal in extreme jetski and Sofielle Dela Cruz in extreme wall climbing.
The Philippine medal tally as of 10 p.m is at 17 golds, 29 silvers and 67 bronzes, good for the sixth spot behind leading Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.
