Janrey Pasaol was officially named as the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball Most Valuable Player in a brief awarding ceremony at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Sunday, Dec. 14.
Pasaol became the eighth Tamaraw to bag the best individual award next to former school greats in Joselino Roa (1961), Anthony Williams (1981), Glenn Capacio (1983), Johnny Abarrientos (1991), Arwind Santos (2004, ’05), RR Garcia (2010), and Terrence Romeo (2013).
Fresh off his Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 stint in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, the 21-year-old Pasaol hoisted the plum after leading the statistical points (SPs) race with 81.5 SPs.
Pasaol averaged 15.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.1 steals per contest before FEU fell short of its Final Four hopes, finishing at fifth place with a 7-7 tally.
He edged out De La Salle captain Mike Phillips (80.429), University of Santo Tomas’ Collins Akowe (79.286), National University’s Jake Figueroa (77.286), and University of the East’s Precious Momowei (75.214) for the MVP honor.
Meanwhile, Akowe, 18, as expected, took home the Rookie of the Year plum after amassing 16.43 points, 14.5 rebounds, 1.43 assists, and 1.57 blocks per contest.
The 6-foot-10 Nigerian big man was also part of this year’s Elite Team alongside Pasaol, Phillips, Figueroa, and Nic Cabañero.
