BANGKOK — Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines Secretary General Marcus Manalo slammed the officiating in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games following the tough losses of Olympians Hergie Bacyadan and Nesthy Petecio.
Manalo believed both Bacyadan and Petecio should have won in their respective semifinal bouts but instead suffered losses over what he deemed questionable decisions from the referees and the judges.
Petecio lost to Indonesian rival Hasanah Huswatun via split 3-2 decision, denying her of advancing to the gold medal match.
“Ang pinakamasakit dito kay Nesthy. Hindi bale sana kung aggressive yung Indonesia in the last round or if she was throwing accurate punches that were landing. Pero in terms of volume, in terms of accuracy, pareho kay Nesthy eh,” said Manalo.
“Parang walang basis talaga para ibigay yung round dun sa Indonesia. Even the Thai officials couldn't believe the result. Reportedly, even the Indonesian sports minister was surprised with the result,” he continued.
“Unfortunately, that's how it is in boxing. There's no bout review here. There's no protest.”
Manalo said the same for Bacyadan, who he felt did just enough to win the bout against Thai boxer Manikon Baison in the women’s 70kg semifinals. He also stressed that ABAP won’t have any qualms accepting defeat as long as it was fair.
“Okay lang naman kung talo. I think si Nesthy, si Hergie, they're not at their best physically kasi shorter yung preparation nila. But during those bouts, they did enough to win. Siguro yung manner of losing nila din,” he said
“For Hergie, binigyan siya ng dalawang standing 8 count noong 2nd and 3rd round after winning the 1st round. Binigyan pa si Hergie ng deduction ng the last round,” Manalo rued.
The ABAP chief then went as far as calling the sport to show its integrity in officiating and judging.
“Hindi naman bago ito sa boxing, unfortunately, part of the things that you have to deal with. Pero the sport really has to be better in terms of integrity,” said Manalo.
“Otherwise, baka we don't really deserve to be in the Olympics beyond 2028. Kasi hindi natin mapakita sa mundo na may integrity tayo when it comes to refereeing and judging,” he added.
