Deputy Majority Leaders Manila 1st district Rep. Ernix Dionisio and Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong brushed off the supposed "necessity" for different regional groups in the House of Representatives to declare their backing of Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III.
This, as Dionisio and Adiong noted that such expressions of support were normal in the House especially if there's "stability" in the 300-plus strong legislative chamber and in its leadership.
"Ganun lang naman talaga dito sa House eh (That's normal here in the House), it's reiterating support to the House leader, giving morale boost to whatever has to be tackled by the House, that the members are in support of the leadership," Dionisio said in a recent press conference.
During the presser, the solons were asked why it was "necessary" to release successive manifestos of support for Dy, whose tenure as Speaker started only last Sept. 17 or less than three months ago.
But their responses indicated that there was special reason behind the issuance of such declarations.
"It's evidence that the House is in stable condition. It speaks about stability, it speaks about the support coming from the majority of the House to move forward whatever priority legislation that the leadership of the House would take on," Adiong said.
He agrees with Dionisio that it's a "regular [occurrence]", although the implications of such widespread support for Dy among congressmen is nothing to scoff at.
"This is a collegial body where the numbers do really matter when it comes to pushing a certain legislation. Apart from gathering support, it's also about the House is in unison in moving forward," explained Adiong.
A total of 263 solons have publicly expressed their backing of Dy in recent weeks through various manifestos of support from regional blocs in the House of Representatives.
These have come from Southern Luzon and the Bicol Region (42 congressmen), Visayas (41) Metro Manila (30), Mindanao (67), North Luzon (39), and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. (44).
As House Speaker, Dy is the fourth highest-ranked official in government, next to the President, Vice President, and Senate President. He represents the 6th district of Isabela.
