Five children in Manila in need of liver transplants in India have received financial aid from the city government under its Special Health Fund on Friday, Dec. 12.
Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said four of the young patients will undergo surgery at Indraprastha Medical Corporation Ltd., with each procedure costing $29,000. Another child will receive treatment at Max Healthcare Institute Limited, requiring $8,400 for the transplant.
During his meeting with the beneficiaries' parents, the mayor handed out the fund release documents to them and guided them through the remaining steps for medical and travel processing.
He also reminded the families that the city government and Manila taxpayers stand behind them as their children prepare for life-saving operations abroad.
“Gusto ko lang ipaalam sa inyo na ang panalangin ninyo ay tinutugunan ng city government at ng taxpayers ng Maynila. Magpasalamat kayo sa Diyos at sa taxpayers ng Maynila. Pera ito ng taong-bayan kaya kailangang kumpleto ang papeles. Mas mahirap maghanap ng pera kaysa mag-asikaso ng requirements (I just want to let you know that your prayers are being answered by the city government and the taxpayers of Manila. Thank God and the taxpayers of Manila. This is the people's money so the paperwork must be complete. It is harder to find money than to take care of the requirements)," Domagoso said.
“Marami na tayong naipadala at karamihan sa kanila ay naging matagumpay ang operasyon (We have already sent many and most of them have had successful operations),” he added.
The mayor also noted that Philippine surgeons are moving closer to performing liver transplants locally, which could eventually reduce reliance on foreign hospitals.
Last Nov. 18, the Domagoso visited the country’s first successful pediatric liver transplant performed in a government hospital, involving a 9-year-old patient with biliary atresia.
The operation, carried out at the UP Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH), was funded through the ₱30 million raised by the Mayor and donated to UP-PGH to support life-saving pediatric surgeries.
“Ipanalangin po ninyo 'yung mga taga-PGH na magtuloy-tuloy na first operation. Ginawa sa Pilipinas, so far successful (Please pray for the people of PGH to continue their first operation. It was first done in the Philippines and was successful)," Domagoso said.
“Kapag nagpatuloy ang tagumpay ng mga unang operasyon dito, hindi na natin kailangang pumunta sa India. Dito na natin magagawa ang liver transplant (If the success of the first operations here continues, we will no longer need to go to India. We can now perform liver transplants here)," he noted.
