The search for the country’s next football stars is on as promising youngsters take center stage in inaugural Villarreal 7s Filipinas Cup which kicks off at the Ayala Vermosa Football Pitch in Imus, Cavite from Dec. 13 to 14.
A total of 12 teams, composed of local and international clubs, including 67 participants from the Villarreal Academies based in Sydney and Brisbane, plunge into the two-day meet where participants could immerse themselves in continuous action and earn valuable experience.
The Villarreal Philippines Academy is spearheaded by directors Eumir and Neth Siao.
"We're very excited because these kids would have their opportunity to experience this kind of competition where they can improve their knowledge and skills in football," said Eumir.
Gracing the event with his inspiring story was ambassador Marcos Senna, the former Villarreal CF player in LaLiga and a UEFA Euro 2008 champion with Spain national team.
“The main lesson I want to teach to the children is to enjoy the sport as much as possible,” said Senna through Mar Llaneza, Villarreal’s Business Development Manager who served as his translator.
“And try to make out of this experience, and enjoy it, be creative and try to be the best in their positions,” added Senna.
The 49-year-old defensive midfielder also stressed that he was just trying to show his gratitude to the sport that changed his life by imparting his knowledge and skills to the youth.
“I’m grateful for everything that the football community has done throughout my career, and I’m just trying to give back through this kind of project with the grassroots,” Senna continued.
“To continue their development and set an example for them, because I grew up in a tough neighborhood before I became professional. I want to share my story to them,” he added.
