Mandaluyong fire injures 3, displaces around 230 families

Three individuals were injured, and around 230 families were displaced after a massive fire broke out in a residential area in Mandaluyong City on Friday night, Dec. 12.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire started at 6:32 p.m. on the second floor of a two-story house on Fernando Street in Barangay Pleasant Hills.
The BFP said the fire, which reportedly involved houses made of light materials, quickly spread and was raised to first alarm at 6:38 p.m., second alarm at 6:42 p.m., and third alarm at 6:54 p.m.
The fire escalated to the fourth alarm at 7:08 p.m. and the fifth alarm at 7:19 p.m. before being extinguished at 10:15 p.m.
Three individuals were immediately attended to by medical personnel, including a 51-year-old woman who experienced difficulty breathing, a 56-year-old woman who sustained abrasions on her back, and a 23-year-old woman who suffered a first-degree burn.
The BFP said around 200 houses were burned, which affected around 230 families, or about 600 individuals.
The affected families are currently staying at the barangay covered court, while others are taking shelter at a neighboring barangay’s multi-purpose hall. The local government provided them with modular tents and food packs.
Relatives of some of the affected residents took to social media to appeal for donations, including clothes, relief goods, hygiene kits, and financial assistance.
The estimated damage caused by the fire is around P1 million.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
