BANGKOK --- Alas Pilipinas rediscovered its winning form in a 25-13, 25-8, 25-18 crushing of Singapore to secure a semifinals seat in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games women’s indoor volleyball on Friday, Dec. 12, at the Indoor Stadium Huamark here.
The Filipinas vented their ire on the hapless Singaporeans to bounce back from an opening day loss to defending champion Thailand on Thursday and close the Group A play with an even 1-1 win-loss record.
Youngbloods Alyssa Solomon, Angel Canino, Bella Belen, Shaina Nitura and Amie Provido provided the spark as Alas advanced to a fifth straight semifinals appearance and remained on track in its bid to end a 20-year medal drought.
"Super happy po ako sa naging panalo po namin ngayong araw and siyempre marami pa po kaming paghahandaan talaga semis po. And, ayun po, sa game po ngayon parang nakita po namin kung ano yung naging mga kulang pa po namin. So ayun po, improve pa rin po," said Solomon.
Alas was in full control of the first two sets, had a scare in the third before eventually restoring order to rebound from an 11-25, 17-25, 16-25 loss to the 15-peat-seeking Thais.
“Siguro yung eagerness namin manalo sa game namin ngayon (lumabas) lalo na hindi naging maayos yung naging result yesterday. Hindi ‘yun ‘yung gusto naming result and ‘yun, ngayon po namin binawi ‘yung sa laro kahapon," Solomon added.
The Philippines will battle in the knockout semifinal on Sunday the winner between Group B squads Indonesia (2-0) and Vietnam (2-0), still playing as of press time.
Thailand (2-0) finished as the top seed in the group and will face the No. 2-ranked squad in Group B.
Singapore finished with a 0-2 mark.
Nitura and Provido saw extended minutes and anchored Alas’ dominating second set performance. The duo scored three each in Alas’ closing 9-1 blitz with Nitura landing an ace for set point before Provido’s finishing hit.
Singapore showed signs of life in the third and kept it close before Alas bolted to a 21-15 lead. The Singaporeans answered with three straight points before Alas completed the sweep with four consecutive hits punctuated by a Maddie Madayag kill.
Eya Laure did not see action for a second straight game due to a minor abdominal strain she suffered during training. The veteran winger is expected to play in the semis.
