Navotas City lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco has asked his supporters to totally ignore social media pages that are spreading fake news about him, saying that even leaving an "angry reaction" wouldn't help the solon.
This, as Tiangco castigated these fake news peddlers, whom he described as corrupt individuals.
(Please: do not gossip and go to the pages of those spreading fake news against me, especially not to follow them, react [even with an angry emoji], view, or worse, share their posts, because with every click, they profit, and as they earn, they will spread even more lies.)
Tiangco said fake news preddlers rob Filipinos of their fundamental right to truth and correct information.
In the same Facebook post, Tiangco said that some corrupt private individuals and social media personalities have been spreading fake news against him to destroy his reputation.
Sila yung mga magnanakaw ng katotohanan (There are also private individuals or social media personalities who are corrupt. They are the ones spreading fake news to make money. They are the thieves of truth),” he said.
The veteran lawmaker called on the youth to become vigilant and proactive in combating misinformation. He emphasized that young Filipinos must lead the fight for integrity and responsible digital engagement.
“Sobrang laganap na ang fake news at umaasa ako na ang kabataan ay ang magiging kampeon laban dito (Fake news is now extremely widespread, and I am hoping that the youth will be the champions against it),” Tiangco said, as he urged them to identify the brain behind the spread of disinformation against him.
In line with International Anti-Corruption Day, he also encouraged the youth to unite and fight corruption using modern technology and digital tools like blockchain and artificial intelligence.
(The youth are at the forefront of advancing digital transformation, and I trust in their ability to develop innovative solutions to increase transparency in government, improve access to information or to ensure the right of citizens to ask, receive, and share information, and to protect whistleblowers, those who expose corruption.)
Tiangco earlier pushed for the passage of his proposed measure, House Bil (HB) No. 5699, which sought to give the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) more teeth to investigate and hold accountable those involved in anomalous flood control projects.
According to Tiangco, HB No. 5699 will upgrade the ICI into the Independent Commission Against Infrastructure Corruption (ICAIC). This will help make ICI investigations and the filing of appropriate cases faster and more effective.
The ICAIC will be granted the authority to file cases, issue subpoenas and hold departure orders, as well as conduct broader investigations.
