BTS honored with presidential commendation for donations
Grammy-nominated K-pop group BTS became a recipient of a presidential commendation for their donations, including UNICEF’s “Love Myself” campaign.
South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety hosted the 5th Korea Good Donation Awards and organized by the Korea Council of Charitable Organizations on Dec. 7.
The ceremony honored seven individuals and 13 organizations and companies for contributing to the spread of donation culture.
Interior and Safety Minister Yun Hojung said, “The warm sharing of the awardees will make our society healthier. It is a force that leads to the community.”
BTS and Samsung Electronics received the presidential commendation for their good deeds.
The ministry cited BTS for raising 9.2 billion won (about $6.26 million) in donations through UNICEF’s “Love Myself” campaign.
All BTS members belong to the UNICEF Honors Club, a group of high-value donors.
They were also commended for contributing to the spread of a culture of donation through participatory donation sharing with their fans, including giving 1.5 billion won (about $1 million) to the national forest fire recovery fund this year.
Samsung was honored for donating 920 billion won (about $626 million) in over 27 years.
Also honored with a Prime Minister’s Award was Korean actress Go Doo-shim, 74, for her fundraising and volunteer work to foster talent among low-income children, develop Jeju Island's culture and arts, and help children overseas.
