BANGKOK — Aleah Finnegan had to endure a long and anxious wait before she finally got to celebrate Team Philippines’ fifth overall gold in the women’s artistic gymnastics vault apparatus in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games at the Thammasat University Rangsit Campus on Thursday, Dec. 11.
The 22-year-old Filipina gymnast registered 13.7 points on her first vault and then followed it up with 12.76 points for an average of 13.433 points to beat Thi Quynh Nguyen of Vietnam and Kang Xian Yeap of Malaysia for the top honors.
It was an anti-climactic victory, however, for Finnegan as the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines had to contest the initial result where the Filipina was shown only finishing second.
A long wait then ensued as the judges opted to recompute the scores, eventually confirming that Finnegan was indeed the winner.
Nguyen averaged 13.4 points for the silver while Yeap had 12.96 points for the bronze.
Also delivering a silver in the women’s gymnastics was 17-year-old Haylee Garcia after scoring 12.233 points in the uneven bars. She finished behind Rachel Yeoh of Malaysia (13.300 pts) and ahead of Coleen Hong of Singapore (10.933).
On the men’s side, Justin Ace De Leon snared two bronze medals in the floor exercise and still rings, scoring 12.500 in the former and 12.700 in the latter.
