DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Council has adopted a resolution commending former President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration and the government of China for the construction of the Bucana Bridge here.
The resolution, delivered during a privilege speech by Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, chairman of the Committee on Finance, cited the bridge’s role in easing traffic, boosting the economy, and strengthening diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Dayanghirang recognized the Bucana Bridge – also known as the Davao River Bridge Project – as one of the flagship infrastructure projects initiated under the Duterte administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program.
The resolution said the project is expected to improve traffic flow in key areas of Davao City by improving access between coastal areas and business districts and providing safer, more efficient routes for the public.
The city council acknowledged that the bridge forms part of Philippine-China cooperation during the Duterte administration, reflecting enhanced bilateral relations, economic coordination, and infrastructure collaboration.
Councilors noted that diplomatic ties between the Philippines and China have strengthened over the years, particularly through cooperation in infrastructure, trade, and investment partnerships that have contributed to economic growth in both countries.
The resolution traced the long-standing historical relations between the two nations, citing centuries of cultural and trade exchanges that eventually led to the establishment of formal diplomatic ties on June 9, 1975.
Dayanghirang said these relations expanded further during Duterte’s administration through cooperation agreements, people-to-people exchanges, and strategic partnerships aimed at national development and regional stability.
The city council said the Bucana Bridge is more than just an infrastructure project. “It is a symbol of cooperation, mutual respect, and friendship between the Filipino people and the Chinese government.”
Dayanghirang said people are among the primary beneficiaries of the project, which is expected to contribute to economic growth, transportation efficiency, and increased opportunities for commerce, tourism, and community development.
The city council commended Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government for their support in constructing the bridge and highlighted China’s role in promoting national development and enhancing public welfare here.
Dayanghirang said the committee will furnish copies of the resolution to the Chinese Embassy, the office of President Xi Jinping through diplomatic channels, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Davao City Mayor’s Office, and other concerned agencies for their information and guidance.
The P3.126-billion project was fully funded by a grant from the Chinese government and implemented through a contract with China Road and Bridge Corp.
The Bucana Bridge is scheduled to open on Dec. 15.
