Albay on alert for possible increase in Mayon volcanic activities
LEGAZPI CITY – The provincial government of Albay, through the Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), on Wednesday issued a preparedness advisory after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported changes in Mayon Volcano that indicate the presence of new and shallow magma.
In advisory No. 2025-48, Albay Gov. and PDRRMC chair Noel Rosal said for disaster avoidance and public safety, they have strictly prohibited all human activities within the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone which includes mountain climbing, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding, orchid picking, vegetable harvesting, and other activities.
Rosal directed all cities, municipalities, and barangay disaster risk reduction and management councils around Mayon Volcano to ensure preparedness and continue monitoring activities in their areas.
“All are directed to stay on heightened alert, coordinate closely, and mobilize resources as needed,” Rosal said.
The public was advised to remain alert and standby for official updates and further advisories from Phivolcs and local authorities.
Based on the Phivolcs advisory, changes in Mayon's activities could increase rockfall incidents from a daily average of three to 16. (PNA)
