The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will immediately address pedestrian infrastructure along EDSA to make commuting safer for all.
DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the initiative, directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., aims to make EDSA more commuter-centric.
He added that the project will prioritize vulnerable sectors such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and pregnant women.
Lopez and DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, joined by members of Altmobility PH, Move as One Coalition, and other civil society organizations, inspected EDSA from Ayala, Makati to Roxas Boulevard, Pasay on Tuesday.
During the inspection, they agreed on short-term measures including widening pedestrian lanes, creating shared bike lanes, repairing waiting sheds, and removing obstructions along commuter routes.
Dizon emphasized that the revamp is a long-overdue response to commuters’ daily struggles.
“If you travel EDSA every day, commuting really is stressful, and it needs to be fixed once and for all. As the President said, we must finally address this. Many have complained, yet nothing has happened, so the President instructed us, together with Sec. Banoy and MMDA Chairman Don Artes, to make EDSA pedestrian-friendly and commuter-friendly,” Dizon said.
The project underscores the government’s commitment to safer and more accessible commuting along Metro Manila’s busiest corridor.
