The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday, Dec. 8, that it has launched a comprehensive investigation into the killing of a former journalist turned councilor in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur.
Gerry Campos, a former radio broadcaster and municipal councilor in Marihatag town, was stabbed dead last Dec. 6 while walking near a gasoline station in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Marihatag.
While the 42-year old attacker identified as Sandy Rivas was apprehended, Acting PNP Chief Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said investigators have yet to establish the motive behind the crime.
“The Philippine National Police condemns this attack. We assure the family and friends of Gerry Campos that we will look into this case to determine the motive and hold accountable those behind this senseless killing,” Nartatez said in a statement.
He assured the victim’s family that the case would be pursued thoroughly to determine whether other individuals were involved.
Before entering local politics, Campos served as a director of Radio Mindanao Network and later managed Radyo Serbato in Butuan City.
Nartatez said the police force remains committed to protecting communities and members of the press.
He stressed that acts of violence or attempts to silence journalists will not be tolerated.
The PNP also urged residents to report any information that may help clarify the circumstances behind the killing.
