Philippines bans Taiwan, Spain pork imports due to African swine fever outbreak

The Philippines is imposing a temporary ban on the importation of pork products from Taiwan following the confirmation of an African swine fever (ASF) outbreak, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel issued Memorandum Order No. 74 to implement the suspension on the entry of live pigs and their products, including pork meat, pig skin, and semen used for artificial insemination, originating from Taiwan.
This was prompted by a report from Taiwanese veterinary officials to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) on Oct. 25, which verified an ASF outbreak affecting domesticated pigs in the city of Taichung.
Tiu Laurel said the temporary ban is critical to protect the country’s multibillion-peso hog industry from the highly contagious disease.
“We have to be vigilant in preventing further ASF infections to protect jobs and investments in the swine industry and ensure food security and consumers’ health,” he said.
Under the DA order, all previously approved sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) permits for pork imports from Taiwan are automatically revoked.
Applications for new import clearances will remain suspended “until further notice.”
The DA chief has also ordered veterinary quarantine officers at all major ports to stop and confiscate any shipments containing these restricted commodities.
Over the weekend, Tiu Laurel also imposed a temporary ban on pork products coming from Spain, also due to a confirmed ASF outbreak.
Unlike Taiwan, which has only shipped 23 metric tons (MT) of pork, Spain is the country’s second-largest source of pork with 131,065 MT as of the end of September, based on the latest government data.
Despite this, Tiu Laurel is not expecting an increase in pork prices or a tight supply over the holidays, when demand is higher.
Last week, the DA rolled out a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) on pork across Metro Manila wet markets to prevent potential spikes in the commodity.
The MSRP for pork liempo (belly) was set at ₱370 per kilo, while kasim (shoulder) and pigue (ham) are ₱330 per kilo.
Based on the latest market monitoring of the agency, prevailing prices of locally produced liempo in Metro Manila are ₱393.23 per kilo, while imported liempo is ₱311.86 per kilo.
Local kasim sells for ₱340.79 per kilo, compared with ₱256.35 per kilo for imported kasim.
Meanwhile, local and imported pigue are priced at ₱341.71 and ₱256.25 per kilo, respectively.
