Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto announced the city's banning of gambling advertisements and promotions on Monday, Dec. 8, as part of its sweeping reforms to curb the negative effects of gambling and other vices on Pasigueños.
Sotto said the city government had passed Ordinance No. 26 s-2025, authored by Councilor Paul Senogat, preventing the setting up of billboards, signages, sponsorships, and other forms of advertisement and promotions from gambling companies within the jurisdiction of Pasig City.
There are things that are no longer under the jurisdiction of the LGU, especially when it comes to national/online matters, but banning its advertisement in our city is a big step. Why? I have seen many people get addicted and their lives ruined because of active-play gambling games. If a person voluntarily seeks it out, that is their decision; but it is a different matter if you are reminded/encouraged to go back there every now and then)," Sotto explained.
Pasig City became the first city in the country to ban Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) and computer gambling shops (e-games) with the passing of its Ordinance 55 s. 2022.
The anti-gambling ordinance disallows “the operations, applications, and approval of licenses to operate online games of chance, including, but not limited to, online casinos, E-games, online sabong, E-Bingo outlets, online poker, and computer gaming stations.”
It also disallows the “operations of service providers providing technical support” to the aforementioned online games of chance. These include “POGOs and any related business thereof within the territorial jurisdiction of Pasig City.”
Now, I'm happy because POGO has been banned throughout the Philippines and some people have even been convicted for crimes related to it)," the mayor noted.
