The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed the impending deportation of Filipino national Greggy Valerio Sorio, known among supporters as “Kuya G,” after US immigration authorities denied his latest bid to remain in the United States.
In a statement on Monday, Dec. 8, the DFA said the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco reported that the Northwest ICE Detention Center is preparing to remove Sorio following an Order of Removal issued by the US Immigration Court. His most recent Application for Stay of Removal was also denied by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The DFA said it had previously extended legal support to Sorio through the government’s Legal Assistance Fund, but noted that the immigration court’s ruling stands.
Medical condition monitored
The DFA detailed that once the Consulate learned of Sorio’s health concerns — including ulcerative colitis — it repeatedly coordinated with US officials to ensure he received medical examinations, hospitalization, follow-up checkups, and prescribed medication.
It also submitted multiple requests for humanitarian consideration, asking US authorities to delay Sorio’s deportation until he had substantially recovered.
However, ICE’s Health Services Corps determined that Sorio was “medically cleared for deportation,” the DFA said.
US sovereign right respected
Despite this, the DFA stressed that it recognizes the authority of the United States on the matter.
“The Department respects this decision and recognizes the sovereign right of the United States to determine who may be allowed to remain in its territory,” it said.
The DFA said it “intends to provide ‘Kuya G’ with the necessary assistance upon his arrival in the Philippines,” though it did not elaborate on what form this support will take.
It likewise reaffirmed its mandate to assist Filipinos overseas, saying it remains committed to protecting nationals through its Foreign Service Posts “in accordance with relevant conventions and international agreements, and with due respect for applicable local laws and regulations.”
