'Amihan,' shear line to bring rains over parts of the Philippines on December 8
LPA, former 'Wilma,' lingers near Antique; PAGASA monitors possible re-intensification

The northeast monsoon (amihan) and the shear line are expected to bring rains over parts of the Philippines on Monday, December 8, as the low-pressure area (LPA)—formerly Tropical Depression Wilma—lingers near Antique, with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) closely monitoring its possible re-intensification.
PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said the LPA still has a medium chance of re-developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 to 48 hours, although current data suggests a higher likelihood that it will dissipate completely.
“Base dito sa ating latest satellite image, makikita natin dito na itong Low Pressure Area, ito yung bagyong Wilma na kahapon ay humina, naging low pressure area na lamang ang bagyong Wilma. At base sa datos natin, meron medium chance yung posibilidad na ito ay maging bagyo muli in the next 24 to 48 hours (Based on our latest satellite image, we can see here that this low-pressure area is the former Tropical Storm Wilma, which weakened yesterday and has now become just a low-pressure area. According to our data, there is a medium chance that it could intensify again into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 to 48 hours),” Badrina said.
As of 3 a.m., PAGASA said the LPA was located over the coastal waters of Culasi, Antique.
PAGASA noted that the shear line and the “amihan” remain the dominant weather systems affecting Luzon, bringing rains to several areas.
Mimaropa and Western Visayas are expected to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the LPA, with possible flash floods or landslides from moderate to heavy rains.
The Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, and Quezon will also have cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms due to the shear line.
Metro Manila, the rest of Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and CALABARZON will see cloudy skies with rains brought by the northeast monsoon, which may trigger flash floods or landslides during periods of moderate to at times heavy rainfall.
In the Bicol Region, cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected due to the easterlies, while the Ilocos Region may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains from the northeast monsoon, with no significant impact.
Meanwhile, Mindanao and the rest of Visayas will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms from localized thunderstorms, with the possibility of flash floods or landslides during severe storms.
PAGASA advised the public, especially those in vulnerable areas, to stay updated on the latest weather bulletins.
