The day Malacañan became a playground

For most of the year, Malacañan is a place of furrowed brows and heavy folders—an office defined by crisis meetings, policy debates, and the quiet tension of decisions that shape a nation. But once a year, the gates open and the mood shifts. The marble floors echo not with protocol but with the footsteps of children running toward Christmas.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Palace transformed into an enormous playground for the Balik Sigla, Bigay Saya 2025 Nationwide Gift-Giving, as 3,000 children from Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) centers and nearby barangays filled the Kalayaan Grounds with laughter, shrieks, and the kind of joy that makes even the most hardened bureaucrat smile.

It was the one day when the Palace looked far less like the seat of executive power and more like a theme park. Giant inflatables towered over the lawns. Magicians, circus performers, and mascots pulled squeals from toddlers. Booths offering games, snacks, face painting, and treats lined the walkways. And everywhere—the unmistakable glow of children who knew they were somewhere special.
When smiles replace statecraft
President Marcos, opening the program, captured the shift perfectly.
“Pag nandito kayong mga bata… lahat nakangiti (When the children are here, everyone is smiling),” he told the crowd.
“Lahat magaang ang loob at lahat naramdaman ulit ang tunay na Pasko dahil nakita natin ‘yung inyong mga ngiti (Everyone feels light and they feel the true spirit of Christmas because of your smiles),” he added.
For a Palace more accustomed to gravity than giggles, the difference was striking. Staff members who normally marched briskly now knelt to tie shoelaces, pass out gifts, or point excited kids toward the attractions.
“Kapag kami nakikita namin kayo, naaalala namin kaya kami nagtatrabaho, hindi para sa sarili namin, kung hindi para sa inyo (You remind us that we work not for ourselves, but for you),” Marcos said, adding that the presence of children strengthens the resolve of those in government.
“The biggest treasure that we have here in the Philippines are these, our children—the future of our country.”
Governance, for a moment, softened into something simple and grounding.

Christmas inside the Palace
The annual gift-giving project—now on its fourth year—was initiated by the Office of the President in 2022 to create a meaningful holiday experience for Filipino children, particularly those who seldom get moments of joy.
This year, the Palace grounds became a full festival site. The event featured:
• Inflatable castles and obstacle courses
• Giant trampolines and play zones
• Circus acts, clowns, magic shows
• Activity booths and food stalls
• Gifts distributed by the President and First Lady
Apart from the 3,000 children in Malacañan, simultaneous events reached 19,000 more children in 56 DSWD centers and 78 DepEd schools nationwide.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian described the impact most clearly, saying the event was a big deal to the children.
“Ngayong araw 500 kabataan mula sa Region 1, National Capital Region, 4-A, at Central Luzon ang dinala namin dito… may mga pagkain, may mga regalo, at higit sa lahat nakakasama nila ang Pangulo (Today, we've brought 500 kids from Region 1, NCR, 4-A, and Central Luzon. There's good, gifts, and they get to spend time with the President),” he said.

“So napakalaking bagay nito para sa ating mga kabataan na dumanas ng mga masasakit na istorya sa kanilang buhay (So this is a big deal for the kids who had gone through unfortunate events in their lives),” he added.
For some, the day meant far more than fun.
For children who have suffered, a day of healing
Many of the young guests came from shelters—children of abused women, victims of neglect, or those who had lived through trauma.
“Our kids are so happy today,” said Jasmin Pasong, the head of DSWD NCR-Haven for Women.
"As we can see po, na-observe po namin kanina napakasaya po nila (We've observed that they are so happy)," she added.
Some children had never before stepped inside a place as grand as the Palace. Others had never received a Christmas gift.
“You can see the excitement when they arrived,” said Barangay 645 Sangguniang Kabataan chair Beah Salonga, who noted that children were lining up as early as 5:30 a.m.
A Palace that remembers its heart
Every administration faces its share of drama, disorder, and criticism. But here, Marcos chose to end the year on a quiet note of humanity.
“Maraming salamat sa pagdala ninyo ng saya dito (Thank you for bringing joy here),” he told the children before stepping off the stage.
Government work, he said, becomes lighter when those it serves are right in front of it—smiling, dancing, and reminding everyone why service exists in the first place.
For one December morning, Malacañan returned to its earliest function—not as a fortress of power, but as a home.
Where once men in suits carried documents, now children carried balloons.
Where once decisions weighed heavily, laughter drifted across the grounds.
And where once Christmas meant obligations and schedules, it now meant something gentler: 3,000 reminders that the country’s future is bright—and still full of wonder.
