CJ Gesmundo underscores 'vital role of the press' in protecting democracy
Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo has underscored the vital role of “a free, principled, and fact-driven press” in protecting democracy.
Gesmundo pointed out that the press is not only a source of information but an integral pillar of democratic life.
He said: “In any democracy, a free and principled press is not merely desirable, it is indispensable. That is why it is called the Fourth Estate. It is the fourth unofficial pillar of a democratic way of life.”
The Chief Justice pointed out that the press “is ideally the conscience that keeps authority accountable, the voice that amplifies public discourse, and the mirror that compels both public and private individuals and institutions to confront reality.”
At the same time, Gesmundo highlighted the press’ responsibility in shaping public understanding of the country’s economic landscape as he stressed that business and financial matters must be communicated clearly and responsibly.
He also pointed out the link between the rule of law and economic stability, and noted that “efficient courts boost investor confidence and contribute to national productivity.”
Gesmundo then highlighted the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations (SPJI), the Supreme Court’s (SC) five-year blueprint for strengthening the rule of law through responsive and real-time justice.
The SPJI, which was launched in October 2022, is anchored on four principles -- justice that is timely and fair, transparent and accountable, and equal and inclusive -- all supported by technologically adaptive management.
He said: “For the Judiciary to remain relevant and effective, it must evolve. Gone were the days when tradition alone could sustain us. Fidelity to the past must not blind us to the problems of the present. The SPJI represents a brave, forward-looking movement to confront these challenges.”
He also said that the SPJI’s achievements reflect the collective effort of the entire judiciary.
“If you could see the passion and dedication of the people in our courts, you would understand that all of our achievements flow from our shared commitment and are realized only through our collective efforts. Perhaps this is what is truly groundbreaking with the SPJI,” he added.
The Chief Justice was a guest during the recent anniversary of BizNewsAsia which was founded 24 years ago by veteran journalist Tony Lopez.
He noted that BizNewsAsia has consistently contributed to informed national discourse by providing reliable and fact-based coverage of issues such as national economy and foreign investments.
During the anniversary celebration, Gesmundo received the Judicial and Public Service Excellence Award from BizNewsAsia.
